Is Your Spouse Addicted To Porn? What Can You Do?

Lieve Boekholt

In the past, many people were not convinced that an addiction to pornography was possible. However, with the increasing availability of pornographic materials, more people are finding themselves dealing with a spouse that is addicted to it. If your spouse is struggling with a porn addiction, here are some ways you can help him or her get the help needed and possibly save your marriage.

Recognize the Signs of Addiction

One of the main problems you might encounter in trying to help your spouse deal with a porn addiction is helping him or her realize that there is a problem. If you have noticed that your spouse is exhibiting the signs of an addiction, you cannot ignore it. Although it might not seem like a problem now, the addiction can escalate and cause serious problems in your marriage.

The signs of a porn addiction are somewhat similar to those you would notice in other addictions. Your spouse might withdraw from others socially, be less than honest about his or her actions, and start to act differently than his or her usual self. Because it is a sex-related addiction, some of the signs are sexual in nature. For instance, your spouse might be more demanding or emotionally distant during sex.  There is a possibility that your spouse might not want to engage in an intimate relationship with you any longer.

Talk to Your Spouse

If your spouse is in denial about his or her addiction, having an honest discussion about it will be difficult. However, it is necessary that your spouse knows that you are aware of the problem and that you are committed to finding a solution. During your conversation, it is important that you let your spouse know how you feel about the addiction and how it has impacted your relationship.

If your spouse is willing, suggest marriage counseling. During marriage counseling, you and your spouse can learn techniques to communicate with each other, discuss your feelings in a productive manner, and also take steps towards overcoming the addiction.

If your spouse is unwilling to attend marriage counseling, you need to seek help for yourself. Although you are not the one with the addiction, you are being impacted by it. By talking to a counselor, you can have an outlet to express your feelings without judgment and also learn what you can do to minimize the impact of the addiction of your life.

Watching your loved one deal with an addiction is never easy. However, by staying honest with yourself and your spouse, you can work to find ways to overcome the addiction and possibly keep your marriage together. Contact a company like Drake Counseling Services for more tips.

About Me
like your spouse as much as you love him

I knew that I loved my husband, but I was having a very difficult time liking him most days. My husband acted much like an overgrown teenager expecting me to do everything for him. He couldn't be bothered to put his trash in the trash can, or put his dirty laundry in the hamper or even carry his dirty dishes to the sink so that I could wash them. After about 18 years of this behavior, I finally had to find someone to go to for help. We started seeing a counselor to try to find a way for me to like him again. It has helped some. My blog will show you a few ways that counseling can help you like your spouse as much as you love him or her.
