Tips To Help Your Child With ADHD At Home

Lieve Boekholt

ADHD is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and a number of children and adults suffer from this disorder. It can make the most common and simplest of tasks difficult to complete. Their minds work differently than someone that doesn't have this disorder. Their brains are not simply focused on that one task, but a number of other things all at the same time, which is what makes completing one task so difficult. If you have a child with ADHD, bedtime, homework, and getting out the door can all be difficult to deal with. To help you at home, there are things you can do. Read on for tips to help your ADHD child (and you as well) at home.

Allow Plenty Of Time

You can't simply tell your child "Let's go" and expect them to run and put their shoes on. Most children cannot do this, let alone one with ADHD. You may have to repeat yourself multiple times or remind them of what they are supposed to be doing a number of times. Allow plenty of time to get out the door, no matter where you are going to give your child enough time to complete the tasks associated with leaving the house. It's not fair of you to expect your child to get ready so quickly, so allow enough time for your child to get ready to leave. This will help prevent you from getting frustrated as well.

Stick To A Bedtime Routine

Bedtime can be a difficult task with most children, but with an ADHD child, it can be even more daunting of a task. Your child may have more anxieties when trying to fall asleep at night or could have a harder time with winding down to sleep. Give your child a bedtime routine and stick to it. Whether it's reading time before bed, or a bath/shower before bed, just be sure to remain the same and keep the time the same as well. Your child needs plenty of sleep, so be sure your child is going to bed at a decent hour, especially school-aged children.

Limit Screen Time

Screen time should be limited in all children, but in ADHD children, they need to be limited to help allow their minds to relax. This is especially true if your child is using tech devices close to bedtime. It can cause difficulties with sleeping and with winding down at night. Try to limit the amount of screen time to just one hour per day if you can.

If your child has ADHD, and you are having a difficult time having your child complete basic tasks, there are other things you can do as well. Discuss your child's disorder with a counselor to help give you other tips to get your child to focus.

About Me
like your spouse as much as you love him

I knew that I loved my husband, but I was having a very difficult time liking him most days. My husband acted much like an overgrown teenager expecting me to do everything for him. He couldn't be bothered to put his trash in the trash can, or put his dirty laundry in the hamper or even carry his dirty dishes to the sink so that I could wash them. After about 18 years of this behavior, I finally had to find someone to go to for help. We started seeing a counselor to try to find a way for me to like him again. It has helped some. My blog will show you a few ways that counseling can help you like your spouse as much as you love him or her.
