Questions To Ask Yourself Before Choosing PHP Treatment

Lieve Boekholt

Partial hospitalization program services are ideal for many patients who are in addiction recovery. They empower you to benefit from treatments in a hospital setting, but they also let you go home after the treatments. You don't have to stay overnight in the hospital so that you can sleep in your own bed. However, they're not right for everybody or every situation. Before you decide on PHP treatment, ask yourself these key questions.

Are You at a High Risk for Withdrawal Symptoms?

If you have a high risk for experiencing withdrawal symptoms during your recovery, inpatient treatment is probably a better fit than partial hospitalization treatment. Many PHP treatment programs won't accept patients at high risk for hallucinations or delirium while dealing with withdrawal from an addiction.

If you are at risk, you may need to be stabilized in a hospital first. That doesn't mean you can never participate in a program where you can go home at night. PHP services may be allowed as you progress in your recovery.

Do You Have A Strong Support System at Home?

A PHP program is ideal for people with a great deal of support at home. Do you have family members who understand your struggles and support your full recovery? Are they willing to check in with you? If you live with others who also struggle with addiction and are participating in self-destructive behaviors, it would be tough to succeed in the program.

Also, if you face any issues of housing instability or dealing with mistreatment of any kind at home, a program where you can stay overnight during your recovery would probably serve your needs better than PHP treatment. To thrive in a program that lets you go home, you need to have a living situation that's a supportive haven for you to continue the healing process.

Do You Have Self-Destructive Thoughts?

Your safety is the primary concern of any PHP treatment program. If you have suicidal thoughts or a desire to harm yourself, you may be referred to an inpatient program. If you are struggling to cope as you recover from addiction, you should receive inpatient care to best address your needs. Once things are stable, you may be able to switch to PHP services.

Finally, when trying to decide if PHP services are a good fit for your life and your health care needs, keep an open mind. Listen to the advice of doctors and other medical staff with expertise on your situation. Even if you need to participate in inpatient treatment at first, you can plan to benefit from PHP services later on as you progress in your recovery. About Me
like your spouse as much as you love him

I knew that I loved my husband, but I was having a very difficult time liking him most days. My husband acted much like an overgrown teenager expecting me to do everything for him. He couldn't be bothered to put his trash in the trash can, or put his dirty laundry in the hamper or even carry his dirty dishes to the sink so that I could wash them. After about 18 years of this behavior, I finally had to find someone to go to for help. We started seeing a counselor to try to find a way for me to like him again. It has helped some. My blog will show you a few ways that counseling can help you like your spouse as much as you love him or her.
